9 juli 2008

The Traffic Enforcement Team of the National Public Prosecutor’s Office was started in 1999. The task of this team is to try to lower the number of traffic offences in the Netherlands. Its attention will be divided between the top five traffic offences:

  • Not wearing a helmet;
  • Not wearing a seatbelt;
  • Ignoring a red traffic light;
  • Drink driving;
  • Speeding.

Traffic rules and regulations are being enforced on so-called black spots, sections of roads or junctions which are particularly dangerous and where accidents frequently occur. The Traffic Enforcement Team of the National Public Prosecutor’s Office makes, from a judicial point-of-view, a contribution to road safety, better traffic flow and a cleaner environment.

The team is part of the National Public Prosecutor’s Officeand gives advice on Dutch traffic rules and regulations. The Traffic Enforcement Team also consults with other organisations which are involved in maintaining road and traffic safety. Together they determine the most effective and efficient way to enforce traffic rules and regulations. New laws are made by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and not by the Traffic Enforcement Team of the National Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment has about 60 employees and is headed by the National Justice Officer for traffic, Mr. W. Freijsen
